“Baked Tomato Florentine Pasta” For "Wordless Tuesday"

Welcome to “Wordless Tuesday!” Where I have just one or two mouthwatering recipes which I know you have been waiting to try……..

Full of health-promoting antioxidants, this baked pasta dish delivers all the flavors of lasagna in less than half the preparation and baking time. Serve it with crusty Italian bread and a tossed green salad.

Wine Pairings:

Red Wine: Pinot Noir, Cabernet, or  Sangiovese….

White Wine: Chardonnay Pinot or Grigio/Pinot Gris….

 “Baked Tomato Florentine Pasta

                                                 Prep Time : 15 minutes
                                                 Cook Time: 30 minutes
                                                 Serves: Makes 6 servings

Ingredients:

1/2 pound ground turkey
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons sugar
2 1/4 teaspoons oregano leaves

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
2 cups uncooked Penne pasta (6 ounces)
1 package (10 oz) frozen chopped spinach, thawed,
drained and squeezed dry
1 1/2 cups part-skim ricotta cheese
1/2 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375°F. Cook turkey and onion in large nonstick skillet on medium heat until meat is no longer pink. Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, water, oregano, sugar, cinnamon, garlic powder, and red pepper. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to low; simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile, cook pasta as directed on package; drain well. Stir pasta and well-drained spinach into sauce until well mixed. Spread 1/2 of the pasta mixture in 11x7-inch baking dish. Spread ricotta cheese evenly over pasta. Top with remaining pasta mixture. Sprinkle evenly with mozzarella cheese. Bake 15-20 minutes or until heated through. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

  1. I could have this right now! And it is also a filling and tasty dish!
    Another great recipe Dottie.
I find it quite hard to cook with the heat now. I tend to prepare more cold dishes with the exception of pasta.. of course that will always be on the table.
    Ciao cara.

    1. Dear Alida,
Thanks you for your nice comment...So glad that you are enjoying all of my recipes and stories. I know this dish is quite tasty and it really is not hard. I can understand about the heat, summer time is a tough time to cook, and lite the oven. I also try to make cold salads and BBQing more than usual. But sometimes a cooler day may come and then that is the day I save for these recipes. And I totally agree no day goes by without some type of pasta. Ciao, and have a good rest of the week...
      Thanks for stopping over...Dottie :)

  2. Good evening Dottie ,
Another delicious recipe for dinner , The ingredients are fabulous and blend so well together .
Pasta is always on the table , inside or out , pasta makes delicious salads .
This dish takes no time at all , less than an hour ... I will turn on the oven for that length of time for this delicious meal , I will go to our local Italian deli for the bread , I don't bake bread much in hot weather .
I love your choice in wine , I think I will have the Pinot Noir with this dish . Thanks so much for sharing and a blessed week to you and family ...~Nee~ ;-D

    1. Dear Nee, good morning, as it is 1 am. Thanks for your comment...I agree friend, the ingredients are what makes the dish and of course, we can't have a day that goes by without some type of pasta. My mom would go crazy as she is the pasta queen in our family. It is fast and fewer calories than a baked pasta or a lasagna. I don't make bread either in the summer as it is not a good thing with the heat, it seems to throw off the recipe. I go to the deli or the bakery. My niece Lauren works part time at a local bakery when she comes home from college. So a lot of my breads come from there. She saves them for me. Thanks about the choice of wines, I really never knew much about wines, but with the blog, I am learning what would be a good pairing. Thank you for your visit and I wish that you and your family have a blessed week as well. Dottie :)

  3. I love pasta of all kind, and baked recipes are so good. This looks terrific. Loads of flavor, and healthier than many baked pastas. Good stuff -- thanks.
